The Schaefer Family

Group photo from the Schaefer Family reunion in Bayfield Wisconson, 2001. There's a more recent photo from
the 2004 reunion here, but the lighting isn't as good.

History of the Numbers

Around 1980, Metta and Bob Heublein gave Grandma and Grandpa Schaefer T-shirts with the numbers 1 and 2 on them. In preparation for the family reunion for their 60th anniversary that year, Donna Wilcox initiated the first numerical listing of the rest of the family. Numbers were assigned based on date of entry into the Schaefer family, either by birth or marriage. At the 1980 reunion, the highest family number was #46, Heather Bailey. As of the 2001 reunion, the highest family number was #77, Benjamin Williss. In 2004, the highest number was #82, Alexander Peters.

Furthermore, each branch of the family has a color. For reunions, everybody has a T-shirt in their families color with their name and number on them. The colors have changed somwehat over the years. The Wilcox branch, for example, started out with tan shirts. But for the next reunion tan wasn't available, so they switched to navy blue. But that was too close to the Bailey's blue, so they switched to purple.

At the reunion in 1980, the T-shirts had large numbers and easily readable names across the top. However, when we went to Grant's Farm for a family event, we were mistaken for a softball league. After that we went to little logos on one side.
